Entering your products in Shopify - video walkthrough
Steps to set up your products in Shopify
Step 1
In the Shopify admin area, click 'Products' on the left menu.
Step 2
In the main window, click 'Add product'.
Step 3
This is the product entry screen. The elements we need to be concerned with are as follows:
- Title - this is what your product is called.
- Description - if we are only selling this product in point of sale, the description may not be important for you. If you are also selling it online, a description is a must.
- Media - this is where you upload your product images
- Category - we have the opportunity to choose a category from Shopify's taxonomy. More information can be found in Shopify's help centre here.
Step 4
Continuing on the product entry screen
- Pricing - We enter what customers will pay for our product, and if they will be charged tax. We can also enter our cost per item if we wish to keep track of this information.
- Inventory - For products we are only selling in person, like barista coffee, we do not need to track our inventory. If we are selling protein bars, tracking quantity may be important so that we can keep track of when our stock is getting low and we need to reorder.
- SKU / Barcode - For products we may need to scan or reorder, we can tick this box & enter the product's SKU and / or barcode.
Step 5
Shipping and variants
- Shipping - We don't need to worry about shipping for items we are selling in-store, like barista coffee.
- Variants - If our product has multiple options that affect the base price, like size, we need to click on 'Add options like size or color'.
Step 6
To add a variant, we type what the option name will be in the box & click 'Create custom option'.
Step 7
Enter the option name, and the option values as desired, then click 'Done'.
Step 8
Shopify will now create the variants. Go ahead & adjust the prices for each variant in the price box.
Step 9
Moving to the top right of the product entry screen, we have
- Status - If you are ready to sell this product, set it to 'Active'. Otherwise, you may choose to set it to 'Draft'
- Publishing - this setting tells Shopify where you want your customers to buy your products. If it is only available in store, we click the 3 ellipses & then click 'Manage sales channels'. In the following screen, ensure only 'Point of Sale' is ticked, and click 'Done'.
Step 10
Product organization allows you to make notes about your products that can be used in different useful ways.
- Product type - this can be used to create automated collections or to create views in your product list. It can be as specific or general as you choose. A product may only have one product type.
- Vendor - this may is generally the brand of your product.
- Collections - if you have created manual collections, you can choose the collection for this product here (more on that in the collections tutorial!). A product may belong to multiple collections.
- Tags - tags are useful for creating automated collections, filters and more. A product may have multiple tags.
Step 11
Ensure you save your product by using the 'Save' button at the top of the page.
