Adding Products

POS Cafe sells your Shopify products, so every cafe item starts as a product in Shopify admin. This guide shows what to fill in for a typical cafe item, such as a coffee with sizes, and what you can leave alone. Options like milks and syrups are not variants; they come later as POS Cafe modifier sets.

  1. Open Products. In Shopify admin, click Products in the left menu.

  2. Click Add product.

  3. Enter the details. Give the product a Title. A Description and Media matter if you also sell it online; for in-store only items they’re optional. Leave Category empty for cafe items (see Tax Calculation Issues).

  4. Set the price. Under Pricing, enter what customers pay and whether tax applies. Cost per item is optional and feeds Shopify’s profit reports.

  5. Decide on inventory. For items made to order, such as barista coffee, leave Track quantity off. Turn it on for items you count, such as bottled drinks or pastries, so Shopify can warn you when stock is low. Add a SKU or Barcode only if you scan or reorder the item.

  6. Skip shipping. Leave shipping settings alone for items sold in store.

If the item comes in sizes that change the base price, add them as Shopify variants. Options that don’t change the base price, or that can be combined, belong in POS Cafe modifier sets instead.

  1. Click Add options like size or color in the Variants section.

  2. Name the option. Type the option name, for example Size, and click Create custom option.

  3. Enter the values, for example Small, Regular and Large, then click Done.

  4. Price each variant. Shopify lists the new variants; set the price for each one.

  1. Set the status. In the top right, set Status to Active when the item is ready to sell, or Draft to keep working on it.

  2. Choose the sales channels. Under Publishing, click the … menu, then Manage sales channels. Tick Point of Sale, plus Online Store if you use POS Cafe online ordering, and click Done.

  3. Organise the product (optional). Product type and Tags are useful for building automated collections; a Vendor is the brand. Under Collections, add the product to any manual collections you’ve already created. See Setting Up Collections.

  4. Click Save at the top of the page.

Group your products into collections, which become the sections of your POS Cafe menu. See Setting Up Collections.
