Registering POS Devices
Registering a POS device links that Shopify POS device to its location in POS Cafe. Registered devices are listed on the location’s POS Devices page, and they are the devices you can choose when you set a receipt printer to Print from specific POS devices only (advanced). You only need to register devices if you want a printer to print orders from particular POS devices rather than from every device at the location.
Why register a POS device?
Section titled “Why register a POS device?”By default, each receipt printer receives orders from all POS devices at its location (Print from all POS devices (recommended)). This advanced option is for venues with more than one prep area of the same name at one location. In that case you can tell each printer which POS devices it should print for. A printer can only be limited to devices that have been registered.
Register a device in Shopify POS
Section titled “Register a device in Shopify POS”Register each device from the POS Cafe tile on that device, while it is logged in to the location it belongs to. The device is registered to the location of the current Shopify POS session.
- Open the tile. On the Shopify POS Home screen, tap the POS Cafe (or POS Cafe - Lite) tile.
- Open Settings. On the Cafe Collections screen, tap Settings.
- Tap Register. In the Actions section, find Register Device (Link this device to the current location) and tap Register.
The button shows a loading state while POS Cafe registers the device. When it finishes, you’ll see Device registered successfully.
POS Cafe records the device’s name (as set in Shopify POS), its device ID, and whether it is a tablet. Registering the same device again, with the same name, updates its existing entry rather than adding a duplicate.
The Register Device text and the Register button can be renamed or translated in Settings → POS Extension Translations. See POS Cafe Tile Translations.
View and manage registered devices
Section titled “View and manage registered devices”- In your Shopify admin, go to Apps → POS Cafe → Locations and choose the location.
- In the Devices section, click Registered Devices (View and manage the POS devices registered to this location).
The POS Devices page lists the POS devices registered to this location:
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Device | The device name from Shopify POS. |
| Device ID | The device’s Shopify POS device ID. |
| Type | Tablet or Desktop. |
| Label | An optional label you can type in (Enter label) to make the device easier to recognise. |
| Actions | A delete button to remove the device from this location. |
After you add a label or remove a device, click Save in the save bar at the top of the page. You’ll see Devices updated successfully.
If no devices are registered yet, the page shows No Registered Devices. Devices appear here once they are registered from the POS app.
Click View Printer Devices to go straight to the location’s Receipt Printers page.
Print from specific POS devices
Section titled “Print from specific POS devices”Once your devices are registered, you can limit a receipt printer to orders from particular POS devices. For printer setup itself, see Epson Server Direct Print.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Apps → POS Cafe → Locations, choose the location, and click Receipt Printers.
- Click Add printer, or click Edit in an existing printer’s details or its … menu.
- Under Device Source, choose Print from specific POS devices only (advanced). (Device Source is only shown for Epson and Star printers.)
- Under Select devices:, tick each device this printer should print for. Devices with a label show it in brackets after the device name. The list also includes POSCafe Online (Web).
- Click Add printer (for a new printer) or Save. The change is saved straight away; there’s no save bar on the Receipt printers page.
To go back to printing from every device, choose Print from all POS devices (recommended). If you choose specific devices but don’t tick any, the printer is saved as printing from all POS devices.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”A device is missing from the Select devices list
Section titled “A device is missing from the Select devices list”Only registered devices appear. If none are registered for the location, the printer window shows No registered POS devices found. Register the device from the POS Cafe tile (see above), making sure the device is logged in to the right location, then reopen the printer.
Registering shows “Failed to get location ID”
Section titled “Registering shows “Failed to get location ID””POS Cafe couldn’t read the current location from Shopify POS, so the device wasn’t registered. Check the device is logged in to a location and try again.
Registering shows “Failed to register device”
Section titled “Registering shows “Failed to register device””The message ends with the reason registration failed. The device wasn’t registered, so try Register again.
A device is registered to the wrong location
Section titled “A device is registered to the wrong location”Devices are registered to the location of the current Shopify POS session. Switch the device to the correct location in Shopify POS and tap Register again. Then remove the old entry from the other location’s POS Devices page and click Save.
Send to prep says a printer or KDS setting needs fixing
Section titled “Send to prep says a printer or KDS setting needs fixing”The Send to prep tile can’t yet send to a receipt printer that uses Print from specific POS devices only (advanced). If any active printer at the location uses this setting, Send to prep shows: “A printer or KDS setting for this location needs fixing in POS Cafe before Send to prep can use it.” Nothing is sent from the tile, but the items still print when the order is saved or paid. To use Send to prep at this location, change the printer’s Device Source to Print from all POS devices (recommended). See Send to Prep.
